Description
Who killed Mr. Jessop? Who stole the Fellows necklace? Who attacked Hilda May? The web of suspicion encompasses a dealer in 'hot goods', respected jewellers, a millionaire, an ex-pugilist, a playboy, members of the nobility, a hard-boiled moll and a girl who could not forget her past. All the clues are there, as the indefatigible Bobby Owen works his way through a real peasouper of a London mystery and pierces the fog - displaying not only magnificent analytical powers but and admirable courage in the face of danger.
Mystery of Mr. Jessopis the eighth of E.R. Punshon's acclaimed Bobby Owen mysteries, first published in 1937 and part of a series which eventually spanned thirty-five novels.
Praise
"What is distinction? The few who achieve it step - plot or no plot - unquestioned into the first rank… in the works of Mr. E.R. Punshon we salute it every time."Dorothy L. Sayers
"Mr E.R. Punshon is one of the most entertaining and readable of our sensational novelists because his characters really live and are not merely pegs from which a mystery depends."Punch

If you are a fan of the "golden age" detective genre, then E. R. Punshon is a must-read. In this, his eighth Bobby Owens mystery the plot is full of twists and hints (none of which I got!). Sergeant Bobby Owens is not a brilliant, intuitive detective, but rather a painstaking fact-finding one. I thoroughly enjoyed this book with its various threads such as murder and a missing necklace, and a Duke and Duchess who may or may not be involved with the missing necklace that took almost the whole book to untangle. There are some shady characters including a well-known receiver of fine jewellery. The two threads to this mystery are investigated in parallel; the murder and the missing necklace, with first one, then the other taking precedence. The ending took me by surprise as I had suspected various characters in turn, but not the one who committed the murder. The other main thread, a missing necklace belonging to a Hollywood actress also surprised me when ALL was revealed. This is probably the most ingenious Bobby Owen mystery yet, but that is not to say I haven't enjoyed all the ones I've read so far. Written and published in the late 1930s it is typical of its era. If you are a fan of the genre then I recommend Punshon's Bobby Owen series.

Mystery of Mr Jessop A Bobby Owen Mystery The Bobby Owen Mysteries Book 8 eBook ER Punshon Reviews
Literally! Even a high speed car chase, a shoot out and a murder! Fabulous missing jewels begin & end this mystery.
Another fun read.
Another great detective story from the Golden Age of British Detective Stories.
Absolutely love these Bobby Owen mysteries. Punish on develops his characters well and his language is sometimes amusing and other times deep. I recommend his books.
This started out a bit verbose and wandering but then became a little interesting. Bobby does well in puzzling through this somewhat farcical mystery.
Each may be read in any order or no particular order at all. This is another delightful Bobby Owens story. Which finds him working hard as always to get the facts and only the facts in this mystery which actually contains two. One, who killed Mr. Jessop. Two what happened to the beautiful diamond necklace owned by an American actress who has fallen out of favor amongst the Hollywood elite.
I'm up to 10 of these now I think and have not been let down yet. If you like golden age mysteries, you owe it to yourself to try the Bobby Owen series. Each of the books is a nice blend of police procedure and camaraderie, confusing human behavior and gems of wryly humorous wisdom. Quite simply a treat.
